The Most Rev. Mouneer Hanna Anis, Archbishop of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East and Bishop of Egypt and North Africa with the Horn of Africa

Archbishop Mouneer Anis was born on 4 April 1950 in Shebin el Kom, in Menouf state in the Nile delta. He was educated at the University of Cairo and received his Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery degree in 1974 and earned a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Tropical Medicine in 1986 and a Certificate in Hospital Management from the University of California’s School of Public Health in 1993. From 1979 to 2000 he served at the Diocese of Egypt’s Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf as medical resident and as director. He prepared for the ministry at Moore Theological College in Sydney and Nashotah House. In 1999 he was ordained priest and deacon for the Diocese of Egypt and appointed to All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. He also served as the administrator of the Diocese of Egypt. On 15 May 2000 he was consecrated Bishop of Egypt in succession to Bishop Ghais Malek,and in 2007 as elected President Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. In 2012 the province’s House of Bishops elected him to a second term as primate and changed his title to “Archbishop”. Dr. Anis is chairman of the Global South steering group of primates of the Anglican Communion. He has played a leading role in Christian – Muslim relations in Egypt and in the broader Anglican Communion and has been one of Egypt’s principal Christian leaders. He is married to Nancy Anis and they have two sons: Shady and Ramez.
