York joins in Nigeria denunciation

1096

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell today issued a message in support of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s statement regarding Archbishop Ndukuba of Nigeria.

“I welcome and support the Archbishop of Canterbury’s clear condemnation of the language used by Archbishop Ndukuba in his recent statement. I share his sorrow that LGBTI+ people across the world will feel less safe as a result. My prayer and hope for the LLF process in the Church of England is that we may find a way of living with our God given diversity and be a place of welcome and belonging for everyone, strengthened and encouraged to live Christ’s story together.”

  1. The Most Rev Mr Cottrell should expand on his statement and affirm that homosexual acts are sinful and that blessing of same-sex couples can never have any place in the church. Then we can begin to take him seriously. His view that people will be “unsafe” if we call out sin is a remarkable one.

  2. I saw this elsewhere, and have to agree with it…..would it have caused as much difficulty if he had called stealing and adultery the same thing?

  3. In days gone by York and Canterbury understood the cultures and circumstances of the provinces…but with Welby’s education limited to an Alpha Course and both bishop’s minimal travel around the communion, they fail to understand that when part of the communion advocates homosexual permissiveness, Muslims in Nigeria will use it as an excuse to murder Christians, so the Primate of Nigeria has to do something to strongly counter the careless theology and lack of pastoral concern for Nigerian Christians from English isolationism and resulting ignorance. If Canterbury and York took time from afternoon tea and got to know the Primates of the Communion they would also know the voice and intensity with which people naturally might speak and then temper their response accordingly.
