Angry with Welby? Join the queue

It was with breathtaking hypocrisy that the Primate of All England, Justin Welby, attacked the government’s plan to send illegal cross-Channel migrants to Rwanda.

In his Easter Sermon, the Archbishop condemned the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Home Secretary Priti Patel for ‘sub-contracting our responsibilities’ as ‘opposite of the nature of God who himself took responsibility for his own failures’. He was joined by Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop of York, in the chorus of condemnation.

Yet British etiquette dictates that when you arrive somewhere you join the back of the queue. We wait our turn, as many legal migrants have being doing for some considerable time whilst they wait for their applications to be processed. How must they feel to see vast numbers of illegal Channel crossers, having stumped up several thousand pounds to pay criminal gangs in a safe country such as France, foist themselves uninvited on the creaking welfare system of this country?
