Welby and Williams to make virtual visits to the US this month

The current and former Archbishops of Canterbury will embark on virtual preaching tours of South Africa and the United States this month. The Most Rev. Justin Welby will preach at a service marking the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa on Sunday September 20 and on the following Sunday will preach at Washington’s National Cathedral.

Both services will be livestreamed, with the archbishop’s sermon added to the live events from Canterbury which begins at 8:00 Eastern Standard Time. The South African service will also mark the opening meeting of the September session of the Synod of Bishops.

At the Washington service, the Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington, will preside and Archbishop will preach at the service beginning at 11:15 Eastern Standard Time.

The former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams will be speaking to the congregants of Christ Church Greenwich on Sept. 20. Lord Williams will discuss the topic of “Being Disciples,” the subject of his 2016 book. The discussion will begin at 11:00 and is accessible via a Zoom conference call.
