Editor’s note: A visitation is an external review of a Church of England Cathedral under canon law taken when problems have arisen with its governance.

As Bishop of Truro, I instituted an External Review of various aspects of the life and ministry of Truro Cathedral in February 2022. This was done with the full co-operation and support of the Dean of Truro, the Very Revd Roger Bush.
I have now received the findings of that review and am very grateful to everyone who contributed to it so helpfully.
In the light of those findings and following careful consideration, I have decided to institute a ‘Visitation’ of the Cathedral. This is a formal, legal process which lies within my power as the Bishop of Truro (under the Cathedrals Measure 1999) to institute.
I am conscious that the delay between the ending of the work of the Review has been unsettling for many and that is regrettable, even if it was unavoidable whilst the necessary work to launch the Visitation was undertaken.
A Visitation allows a diocesan bishop, as Visitor of the Cathedral, to inquire into certain matters relating to the way in which the Cathedral is being governed, gives the bishop the ability to make formal determinations and give directions to resolve any issues arising through the Visitation. It has the advantage of being very clear in its process and gives all those involved a full right of reply in terms of its findings.
I hope the Visitation will take place shortly and that it can be concluded promptly and that it will have at all stages of the process the best interests of the Cathedral and wider community in mind.
In a rapidly changing culture, which brings more challenges for the Church, I felt it was right to conduct a Visitation at this time to ensure that the Cathedral is both clear and efficient in its governance processes, as well as following clear and transparent procedures with regard to safeguarding. I believe that this process will support the Dean and Chapter in effectively implementing the requirements of the new Cathedrals Measure 2021 as well as establish sound foundations for the fruitful future of the Cathedral, in worship, ministry and mission.
