Bishop Philip Jones reports the passing of the Rt. Rev. Charles H. Murphy, III

Dear Anglican Mission Clergy,

It is with sorrow and great hope in the Gospel promise of everlasting life, that I write to you today of the death of Bishop Charles Hurt Murphy, III, a Missionary Bishop in the Anglican Church and our inaugural Apostolic Vicar of the Anglican Church in America. +Chuck passed away early this morning quietly and peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and his Savior. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, three children and six grandchildren.

+Chuck made a huge impact as a bold, innovative leader for all of his ministry. God worked through him in significant and fruitful ways to change the face of Anglicanism in North America for generations to come. His sense of vision and God’s timing was supernatural in origin and scope. Personally, he helped me to see the importance of maximizing people’s potential and giving them freedom to run, to grow into the calling God has for them. He helped me to see outside the box as he surrounded himself with capable leaders. +Chuck often said of the AMiA, “We are about mission, nothing more, nothing less.”

I have to say, as I am sure many of you will attest, no leader has had the impact on my life like +Chuck. The Southern charm and sparkle in his eyes made one feel at ease with him. His faithfulness to the Word and openness to the Spirit characterized his rock solid faith. I will miss him as a mentor and a dear friend.

Please keep Margaret and all the family in your prayers.

God bless you,

+Philip
