The Archbishop of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East reports the 17-18 Nov 2015 meeting of the provincial synod in Larnaca, Cyprus has called upon European and Middle Eastern governments to take firm action to combat terrorism across the region, as well as provide humanitarian support to the mass migration of peoples across the Mediterranean. The Most Rev. Mouneer Anis, Primate of the province and Bishop of Egypt told Anglican Ink, that in addition to internal housekeeping matters, the diocese also prayed for peace in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Libya — areas served by the province. Three resolutions were also adopted by the province: the call for a “responsible diplomacy and strategic thinking to” counter terrorism, end conflicts, aid refugees and “Help the peoples and nations of our suffering region towards a just and peaceful future.” The synod also thanked King Abdullah II of Jordan for the gift of land along the banks of the river Jordan to build St John the Baptist Anglican Church for the country’s Christians. The synod also “unanimously affirmed that our church does not perform marriage ceremonies involving two members of the same sex.”
