The Most Rev. Barry Cennydd Morgan, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Llandaff

Archbishop Barry Morgan was born on 31 January 1947 near Neath, Wales and educated in local schools. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from University College, London in 1968 and a Bachelor of Theology degree from Selwyn College, Cambridge in 1971. He went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Wales in 1986. Archbishop Morgan trained for the ministry at Westcott House in Cambridge and was ordained deacon in 1972 and priest in 1973 and served his curacy at St Andrews Major with Michaelston-le-Pit, Dinas Powis, from 1972-1975, and served as a chaplain and lecturer at St Michael’s College, Llandaff from 1975-77 and as chaplain of Chaplain Bryn-y-Don Community School in 1977. He was appointed rector of Wrexham in 1984 and in 1986 was named Archdeacon of Meirionnydd and rector of Criccieth. In 1992 he was elected Bishop of Bangor and was consecrated on 9 January 1993 at St Asaph’s Cathedral. In 1999 he was translated to the Diocese of Llandaff and elected Archbishop and Primate of the Church in Wales in April 2003. Archbishop Morgan is married to Hilary Morgan and they have two children: Jonathan and Lucy.
