The Melanesian Brotherhood (MBH), one of the most influential and respected religious communities within the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM), is celebrating its 100 years of existence next week with a series of spiritual and cultural events that bring together members and supporters from across the Melanesian region and beyond.

The centenary celebration, guided by the theme “Celebrating Melanesian Brotherhood centenary of Ministry, Faith and Mission”, marks a remarkable milestone in the Brotherhood’s journey of faith, discipline, and service since its founding in 1925 by Ini Kopuria, Guadalcanal.

According to the official program, the centenary events will begin tomorrow morning (Saturday) with a float procession from Honiara to Tabalia — the Headquarters of the Melanesian Brotherhood west of Honiara. This will be followed by the Opening Holy Eucharist Service on Sunday, which will set the spiritual tone for a week-long celebration.

Throughout the week, the program will feature special addresses from prominent Church leaders and members, reflections on the Brotherhood’s mission, cultural performances, and thanksgiving activities. The celebration will conclude on Sunday, October 26, with the admission of Aspirants into Novices, and Novices into Brotherhood, symbolizing the continuation of the Brotherhood’s mission and commitment to serve God and His people.

Already, Brothers, Companions, and Section and Regional Fathers from Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and North Queensland (Australia) have arrived in Honiara to join the historic occasion. Delegates from the Philippines and the United Kingdom are also expected to arrive later this weekend to participate in the centenary events.

A Century of Brotherhood and Mission

Founded a century ago at a time when Christianity was still taking root across the islands of Melanesia, the Melanesian Brotherhood — known locally as Ira Reta Tasiu — has become a beacon of faith and humility. Its mission centers on prayer, service, evangelism, and community living based on the vows of poverty, celibacy, and obedience.

For the past 100 years, the Brotherhood has played a significant role in spreading the Gospel and fostering peace, reconciliation, and unity within communities across Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and other parts of the Anglican Communion. Many remember the Brothers’ courageous role during times of national crisis, especially their commitment to peacebuilding and spiritual healing.

The Power of Brotherhood

The power of brotherhood lies in its unity of purpose — living and witnessing the Gospel in simplicity and service. Generations of Tasiu have walked from village to village, proclaiming God’s word, supporting local churches, and standing alongside the people in times of need.

As the Melanesian Brotherhood marks its centenary, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, the strength of community, and the transformative impact of living the Gospel in everyday life.

The week-long celebrations at Tabalia are not only a time of thanksgiving but also an opportunity to renew the Brotherhood’s mission — to continue being a living witness of Christ’s love for another hundred years and beyond.

Pray for the Community of the Melanesian Brotherhood as they celebrate their 100 years in mission and ministry in our islands and beyond.
