The 19-22 Feb 2015 meeting of the Cuban Synod rejected the counsel of the Archbishop of Canada and voted to rejoin the Episcopal Church of the USA.

The 19-22 Feb 2015 meeting of the synod of the Diocese of Cuba has voted to affiliate with the Episcopal Church of the USA, rejecting the counsel of Canadian Archbishop Fred Hiltz that iit create a commission to study its options and remain under the joint oversight of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Church of the Province of the West Indies and the Episcopal Church. The diocese withdrew from the Episcopal Church in 1967 in the wake of the political dissension between the US and Cuba. A Metropolitan Council composed of the Archbishops of Canada and the West Indies and the US Presiding Bishop have since exercised jurisdiction over the diocese. In 2003 the US General Convention voted to re-admit Cuba to the US Church, but the Cuban diocesan synod narrowly rejected the invitation. The Cuban question returned to the American General Convention in 2009 when it voted to fund a pension programme for Cuban clergy. A report of the proceedings published by the Anglican Journal stated that Archbishop Hiltz, who was present at the meeting, had urged the synod to vote on a resolution urging study on the diocese’s options. However a substitute resolution was introduced calling for for a return to the Episcopal Church, which passed by a vote of 39 to 33. Hiltz told the Anglican Journal “this is not something that’s going to happen overnight. It’s going to take some time for further conversation within the diocesan council, further conversation with the Metropolitan Council.”
