The Somali Islamist terror group al-Shabaab has murdered 36 Christian Kenyans miners. During the early morning hours of 2 Dec 2014, armed terrorists raided a quarry work camp in Koromey in Mandera County, about nine miles from the border with Somalia. The miners were taken outside and separated by religion. The Christians were then shot to death or decapitated. Nine of the dead miners were members of the Anglican Church of Kenya’s St Andrews Church in Mandera. Two members of the congregation were killed two weeks earlier when al-Shabaab stopped a bus driving from Mandera to Nairobi killing 28 Christians on board. Al-Shabaab released a statement after the massacre from their bases in Somali claiming responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation to Kenya’s involvement in the UN-backed peacekeeping missioun in Somalia. The day after the attack President Uhuru Kenyatta responded to protests in Nairobi by accepting the resignation of the country’s national police chief and dismissing the minister for internal security in a bid to shake up the security forces. The president has vowed to stamp out terrorism, and has urged Kenyans not to succumb to al-Shabaab’s plans to divide the country along sectarian lines.
