The Archbishop of Ghana consecrated the former Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Accra today as the suffragan bishop of Accra with responsibility for the diocese in formation of Tema. On 30 January 2022 the Most Rev Cyril Ben Smith consecrated the Rt. Rev. George Kotei Neequaye as the Ghanaian church’s newest bishop. Elected at the 24th dicoesan synod on 25 Sept 2021, Dr. Neequaye will oversee churches in the eastern region of the diocese of Accra. This new diocese, headquartered in Tema, will become the 12th diocese within the internal province of Ghana in the Church of the Province of West Africa.
The sermon for the consecration was preached by the Rt. Rev. Charles May, Bishop of the Highveld in the Anglican Church in Southern Africa. The vice-president of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also spoke to the gathered bishops and church leaders, urging them to lend their support to the government’s quest to end public sector corruption.
A native of Accra, Dr. Neequaye was educated at Trinity Theological Seminary at the University of Ghana, earned a BTh degree at the University of Nottingham in England, and a PhD at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
