I can think of no AoC less suited speak at such a service than Welby, but politics and is politics. I’ll bet you a jam-tart that the themes of ‘good disagreement’, ‘reconciliation’ and ‘community’ are peddled in their typical incoherent and relativistic way, as they represent the the scope of Welby’s interests (and perhaps capacity). Though who knows, maybe he’ll be able to fake it… Perhaps, if he seriously grapples with JHN’s life and legacy, he’ll be shaken and stirred by JHN’s choice of principle, conscience, and theological substance over mere political expediency.
For some reason this announcement brought the following lines to mind: “These rear-guard details in their quaint attire, heedless of incongruity, unconscious that the flanks are turned and all connecting files withdrawn or liquidated–that dead symbols litter to the base of the cult-stone, that the stem by the palled stone is thirsty, that the stream is very low” (David Jones).
I am a bit surprised that Welby has decided to participate in a service hosted by a “ginger group” like the Catholic Church.
I’m a little surprised the Catholic Church wanted Welby, considering Newman’s position.
Newman was at least honest in the end when he realised that he could no longer stay in the Church of England. His previous attempts to interpret the 39 Articles in a more or less Romish way were pathetic.
