John Anderson (former Australian deputy prime minister) in conversation with Gavin Ashenden

  1. The situation in Australia is apparently not as bad as in much of Europe, but governments of both left and right are very timid when it comes to protecting our freedoms, especially of speech and expression. The “immoderate Left” is of course the worst while the “moderate Right” is the best when it comes to freedom issues, but there are not enough people of genuine goodwill in our federal and state parliaments to keep the balance in favour of undoubted protection of freedom. What should go without saying in a modern democracy often just goes because some with loud voices want to mute all other voices. It’s a pity John Anderson is not still in our federal parliament.

Did I hear Gavin say he is in favour of the civil recognition of gay partnerships? That sounds like same-sex marriage by another name.

A very good discussion has been enjoyed by the one who defines himself by the perpendicular pronoun (as Sir Humphrey would say).

    • Ten years ago I was in favor of civil unions for gay couples and was considered a dangerous progressive leftist. Today I am still in favor of civil partnerships and am considered a radical hate-filled homophobe.

  2. This is why Gavin should have been ABoC. Tough talking, no nonsense, and with the right theological approach and understanding.
