Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings in Christ. I am writing to inform you that I will be retiring as your diocesan bishop as of January 1, 2026.

I will have completed a little more than ten years as bishop, and will be closing in on the age of seventy-one (in my fifty-first year of Church work). At that time, Stephanie and I will be moving to Boston, Massachusetts, the place of our ancestors. While there will be an Enthronement on Sunday, January 11, 2026, Bishop Price will have already assumed ecclesiastical authority on January 1.

Stephanie and I are both grateful to God for the surpassing privilege of serving with you in the Diocese of Dallas. I have worked with a remarkable family of clergy. I have great confidence in the gifts of Bishop Price, and feel anticipation for the future the Holy Spirit is opening for the diocese.

There will be time for thank you’s and goodbye’s between now and then. In the meantime, I will be continuing with my round of visitations and other duties, as scheduled. Peace,
The Rt. Rev. Dr. George R. Sumner, Bishop of Dallas
