The Bishops of the Anglican Church in Chile urge all believers to raise our voices vigorously and prophetically in opposition to the bill that seeks to legalize abortion in our nation. In fidelity to the supreme authority of the Word of God and committed to the immutable principles of our Christian faith, we firmly believe that this legislative initiative contravenes divine mandates and threatens the inherent dignity and value of human life.

1. We believe that human life begins from conception

The Bible unequivocally teaches that God is the giver and sustainer of all life. From the moment of conception, each human being is known, loved and formed by the Creator. As Psalm 139: 13-14 declares: “Because you formed my bowels; you made me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, because amazingly and wonderfully I have been made ”.

The embryo is not a mere set of cells, but a human being created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), endowed with dignity and intrinsic value. The Holy Scriptures describe John the Baptist, even in his mother’s womb, in the same way that the Lord Jesus is described in the manger. Thus we also recognize the child in his dignity, both in the womb and outside him (cf. Luke 1:41, 2:12).

2. We believe that defending life is our inescapable duty

The command “You shall not kill ” (Exodus 20:13) seriously confronts us. Legalizing abortion establishes as legitimate the deliberate elimination of defenseless human lives. As Christians, we reject this proposal and recognize it as an obvious violation of God’s instruction.

We recognize with pain the tragic living conditions of many of our compatriots, who are burdened by poverty, violence, abandonment and lack of opportunities. However, we firmly believe that the solution is not to promote death, but to work tirelessly for justice, mercy and the integral well-being of all Chileans.

3. We believe that abortion is not a right

No legitimate right can be based on the denial of the right to life of others. By depriving the unborn of life, we deny the justice that God demands for the most defenseless and vulnerable in our society. This involves openly challenging God’s warning against those who “call evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20). As Christians, we respond to God’s instruction in Proverbs 31: 8: “Open your mouth for the dumb, for the right of all the wretched. ”

We believe that the State, as God’s minister for good (Romans 13: 4), has an inescapable obligation to do justice, protect the defenseless, and ensure that public policies reflect this unwavering principle.

4. We believe there is a better way

We regretfully acknowledge the real suffering of many women facing vulnerable pregnancies. Therefore, we express our deep confidence in a better path than that of abortion. We believe that a compassionate approach, a provision of tangible resources and comprehensive accompaniment can offer an incalculably superior solution to that of abortion. As Christian churches, it is our duty to make ourselves available to all those women to build that best path with them, and thus fulfill the law of Christ: “Let one bear the burdens of others ” (Galatians 6: 2 ).

5. We believe we have a joint responsibility

We believe that it is imperative that the government promote public policies that strengthen family ties, simplify adoption processes, and address the root causes of vulnerable pregnancies. And, as leaders of the Anglican Church of Chile, we believe that it is our joint responsibility to become even more actively involved in these tasks and to prepare ourselves at the service of such initiatives.

We call on our congregations and each of our brothers in Christ to raise a firm and courageous voice in defense of the life and comprehensive care of women. Every human being, from the womb to his encounter with the Creator, is infinitely precious and worthy of the care and restoration that God desires for all those who face vulnerable situations.

Let us remember the words of Deuteronomy 30:19: “Today I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse; So choose life so that you and your descendants live ”.

Let’s choose life, for the sake of our nation and future generations!

DECLARACIÓN DE LA IGLESIA ANGLICANA DE CHILE SOBRE EL PROYECTO DE LEY DE ABORTO

Los Obispos de la Iglesia Anglicana de Chile exhortamos a todos los creyentes a levantar nuestras voces enérgica y proféticamente en oposición al proyecto de ley que busca legalizar el aborto en nuestra nación. En fidelidad a la autoridad suprema de la Palabra de Dios y comprometidos con los principios inmutables de nuestra fe cristiana, creemos firmemente que esta iniciativa legislativa contraviene los mandatos divinos y atenta contra la dignidad y el valor inherente de la vida humana.

1. Creemos que la vida humana comienza desde la concepción

La Biblia enseña de manera inequívoca que Dios es el dador y sustentador de toda vida. Desde el momento de la concepción, cada ser humano es conocido, amado y formado por el Creador. Como declara el Salmo 139:13-14: “Porque tú formaste mis entrañas; me hiciste en el seno de mi madre. Te alabaré, porque asombrosa y maravillosamente he sido hecho”.

El embrión no es un mero conjunto de células, sino un ser humano creado a imagen de Dios (Génesis 1:27), dotado de dignidad y valor intrínseco. Las Sagradas Escrituras describen a Juan el Bautista, aún en el vientre de su madre, de la misma forma con que se describe al Señor Jesús en el pesebre. Así también nosotros reconocemos al niño en su dignidad, tanto en el vientre como fuera de él (cf. Lucas 1:41, 2:12).

2. Creemos que defender la vida es nuestro deber ineludible

El mandamiento “No matarás” (Éxodo 20:13) nos confronta seriamente. Legalizar el aborto establece como legítima la eliminación deliberada de vidas humanas indefensas. Como cristianos, rechazamos esta propuesta y la reconocemos como una evidente violación de la instrucción de Dios.

Reconocemos con dolor las trágicas condiciones de vida de muchos de nuestros compatriotas, que se ven agobiados por la pobreza, la violencia, el abandono y la falta de oportunidades. Sin embargo, creemos firmemente que la solución no está en promover la muerte, sino en trabajar incansablemente por la justicia, la misericordia y el bienestar integral de todos los chilenos.

3. Creemos que el aborto no es un derecho

Ningún legítimo derecho puede basarse en la negación del derecho a la vida del prójimo. Al privar de la vida al no nacido, negamos la justicia que Dios demanda para los más indefensos y vulnerables de nuestra sociedad. Esto implica desafiar abiertamente la advertencia de Dios contra quienes “llaman al mal bien y al bien mal” (Isaías 5:20). Como cristianos, respondemos a la instrucción de Dios en Proverbios 31:8: “Abre tu boca por el mudo, por el derecho de todos los desdichados.”

Creemos que el Estado, como ministro de Dios para el bien (Romanos 13:4), tiene la ineludible obligación de hacer justicia, proteger al indefenso y asegurar que las políticas públicas reflejen este principio inquebrantable.

4. Creemos que hay un mejor camino

Reconocemos con lamento el sufrimiento real de muchas mujeres que enfrentan embarazos vulnerables. Por eso, expresamos nuestra profunda confianza en un camino mejor que el del aborto. Creemos que un acercamiento compasivo, una provisión de recursos tangibles y un acompañamiento integral pueden ofrecer una solución incalculablemente superior a la del aborto. Como iglesias cristianas, es nuestro deber ponernos a disposición de todas aquellas mujeres para construir junto a ellas ese mejor camino, y así cumplir la ley de Cristo: “Sobrelleven los unos las cargas de los otros” (Gálatas 6:2).

5. Creemos que tenemos una responsabilidad conjunta

Creemos que es imperativo que el gobierno promueva políticas públicas que fortalezcan los vínculos familiares, simplifiquen los procesos de adopción y atiendan las causas profundas de los embarazos vulnerables. Y, como líderes de la Iglesia Anglicana de Chile, creemos que es nuestra responsabilidad conjunta involucrarnos aún más activamente en estas tareas y disponernos al servicio de tales iniciativas.

Llamamos a nuestras congregaciones y a cada uno de nuestros hermanos en Cristo a levantar una voz firme y valiente en defensa de la vida y del cuidado integral de las mujeres. Cada ser humano, desde el vientre materno hasta su encuentro con el Creador, es infinitamente precioso y digno del cuidado y la restauración que Dios desea para todos aquellos que enfrentan situaciones vulnerables.

Recordemos las palabras de Deuteronomio 30:19: “He puesto hoy delante de ti la vida y la muerte, la bendición y la maldición; escoge, pues, la vida para que vivas, tú y tu descendencia”.

¡Escojamos la vida, por el bien de nuestra nación y de las generaciones futuras!
