Monsoon rains have led to the worst floods in modern history in North Borneo with over 9000 people displaced from their homes in six districts in Sarawak. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts a second wave of flooding to inundate the region between February 8 and 12. Government and private sector groups have sought to house and feed those driven from their homes by the high water.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kuching, the Rt. Rev. Datuk Danald Jute, wrote: “To the many loving, wonderful, kind, caring and generous people who responded to our flood relief appeal –

“Words cannot sufficiently express our deepest appreciation and gratitude. THANK YOU VERY MUCH is all I can say. MAY YOU BE RICHLY BLESSED AS YOU HAVE BLESSED MANY OTHERS.

“Your kindness and generosity have been a ray of sunshine.

“This is the worst flood we have ever experienced. The scale of the damage is immense. Many lives and communities have been adversely impacted. Our hearts are broken on seeing the devastating aftermaths.

“Sharing here just some photos taken in Bintulu which I managed to visit. Please know that your help has extended beyond Bintulu – right up to Batu Niah, Miri, Julau and several other affected areas.

“Thank you again for joining hands in making a difference by being a blessing.”

Bishop Jute has asked for financial assistance to ameliorate the suffering of those left homeless by the flooding.
