Primates of the Anglican Communion — Archbishop of Kenya

The Most Rev. Eliud Wamukekhe Wabukala, Archbishop of Kenya and Bishop of All Saints Diocese, Nairobi

Archbishop Eliud Wabukala was born in June 1951 in the born in Bungoma West District in Kenya. Reared in an Anglican family he went to work after he completed as secondary schooling as a teacher’s assistant at Butonge Secondary School to help educate his two sisters and five brothers. He entered the Nakura Provincial Commissioner’s office as a clerk and was promoted as district officer serving in Narok. He gave up his civil service post and entered the Kaimosi Teachers College receiving his certificate in 1974. He taught at the Naifarm Primary School in Kitale and in Bungoma being appointed inspector of schools in the Butonge Zone in Sirisia Division. He entered St. Paul’s Theological College, in Limuru, in 1985 to train for the ministry, receiving his diploma in 1988. He taught for two further years at the Matulo Secondary School, in Webuye, and at the Nagina Girls High School, in Busia before entering Wycliffe College of the University of Toronto, which awarded him a doctorate in 1994. He returned to St Paul’s as a lecturer, then dean of the school, before being elected the first Bishop of Bungoma on 13 October 1996. On 24 April 2009 he was elected Primate of the Anglican Church of Kenya and translated to All Saints Diocese in Nairobi following the retirement of Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi, and was installed in office on 5 July 2009. Dr. Wabukala is chairman of the GAFCON primates council and a member of the Global South primates group. He was national vice-chairman of the National Council of Churches of Kenya, from 2000 to 2004, and national chairman from 2004 to 2009 and serves as chairman by appointment of President Mwai Kibaki of the National Anti Corruption Campaign Steering Committee. He was married to Mama Caren Nakhumicha Wabukala until her death in 2010. They have five children. The archbishop married Rhoda Luvuno in May 2012.
