We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Malawi Anglican Social and Development Programme (MASDEP) – the official Development Arm of the Anglican Church in Malawi.
WHY MASDEP? WHY NOW?
The needs in our communities are growing. Poverty, climate shocks, unemployment, and limited access to health and education require a stronger, more coordinated response. In addition, the landscape for development is also changing. To respond effectively and efficiently, the mandate to coordinate Church social and development programs has transitioned from the Anglican Council in Malawi (ACM) Secretariat to MASDEP.
This is an important institutional reform to:
1) Strengthen institutional capacity and improve programme coordination.
2) Create a sustainable platform for resource mobilisation and development programming.
3) Increase local ownership.
4) Deliver sustainable, scalable, high-impact interventions for organisational sustainability.
THE MANDATE OF MASDEP.
✓ Livelihoods and Financial Inclusion – Scaling Savings Ministry.
✓ Health and Nutrition.
✓ Climate Resilience, Climate Justice, Emergency response
✓ Education and Youth Empowerment
✓ Holistic, Christ-centered transformation of communities
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
To Anglican Church Members across all parishes in Malawi: This is our faith in action. Serving the whole person – spirit, soul, and body
To our existing Partners and prospective partners: MASDEP is a trusted, church-rooted platform to invest in lasting, locally owned change across Malawi.
This transition does not change our mission. It strengthens it. The challenges are real: climate change, poverty, weak systems
the Church is called to do more than respond to emergencies. We are called to cultivate change, in hearts, in communities, and in systems. Through MASDEP, the Anglican Church in Malawi is committing to 4 areas of transformation:
1. DIVERSE, SERVANT LEADERSHIP.
Humble leaders who teach the truth of who God is. A Church that is salt and light in its community. Members who understand God’s love and demonstrate that love to others.
2. AGENCY AND RESILIENCE
People with confidence, hope, and the belief that they can create change together. Communities that manage resources wisely, organize themselves, and grow stronger in the face of shocks.
3. SYSTEMIC / STRUCTURAL INFLUENCE
Working together to change how things are done so that justice, inclusion, and sustainability become the norm, not the exception. Long-term change, not quick fixes.
4. A RESTORED ENVIRONMENT
People taking action to heal God’s creation: planting trees, using natural fertilizers, practicing conservation agriculture, and protecting biodiversity for future generations.
Why now? Because God calls us to both faith and action.
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”(2 Chronicles 7:14)
MASDEP exists to walk with parishes and communities as we live out this verse. To pray. To prepare. To restore. The Church is not waiting. The Church is cultivating change.
