The Presiding Bishop of the Church of England in South Africa (CESA), the Rt. Rev. Desmond Inglesby has announced that he will be stepping down from his post due to ill health. On 2 Sept 2014 Bishop Inglesby told the church’s synod that “over the past few years my physical condition has deteriorated quite rapidly and significantly. I have made my decision on the advice of Medical specialists, and I believe it is the right thing for me to do.” Formed in the wake of the Colenso schism in South Africa in the 1870s, CESA (also known as the Reformed Evanglical Anglican Church – South Africa) has close ties with the Diocese of Sydney and the GAFCON movement, but is not recognized as a member of the Anglican Communion. However the validity of its clerical orders is recognized by many provinces of the Anglican Communion and its clergy have been incardinated into the Church of England without re-ordination.
