President Wavel Ramkalawan today received the retiring Anglican Archbishop of Seychelles, the Most Reverend James Wong, for a farewell audience at State House, marking the conclusion of a remarkable 16-year tenure of spiritual leadership and national service.

Accompanied by his wife, Archbishop Wong reflected on his journey and the experiences that have shaped his ministry among the Seychellois people. The meeting, warm and heartfelt, served as an opportunity to celebrate his enduring contributions to both the Church and the broader national fabric.

President Ramkalawan paid tribute to Archbishop Wong’s unwavering commitment, describing him as a “moral compass” for the nation.
“Thank you for being the moral voice in the country and the diocese of Seychelles, addressing many societal issues. Your pastoral work has made a lasting impact and will never be forgotten by the community,” he said.

Speaking to the press following the engagement, Archbishop Wong expressed deep appreciation for the privilege of serving the people of Seychelles. Though stepping down from official duties, he affirmed that his spiritual mission remains ongoing, and he intends to stay engaged in community service.

With the national elections on the horizon, Archbishop Wong issued a heartfelt appeal to all Seychellois citizens to carry out their civic duties in a spirit of peace, love, and mutual respect. He urged the public to embrace the outcomes with grace, placing unity above political division.

“We must not allow our political beliefs to divide us,” Archbishop Wong emphasized. “The future of Seychelles depends on preserving our friendship and national unity.”

To honor the occasion, President Ramkalawan presented Archbishop Wong with a souvenir token as a symbol of lasting friendship and appreciation for his years of dedication.
