A statement from Bishop Martyn and Bishop Saju in response to the publication of the Makin review and the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury

Following the announcement of the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, we would like to express our deep sadness at all that has led to this point.

“We have heard from survivors and also from parish safeguarding co-ordinators who are appalled by the Makin report and deeply angry that church leaders have once again put the reputation of the institution before the needs of victims.

“The Archbishop’s resignation must now be followed by a thorough and careful implementation of the recommendations made by Keith Makin.

“We are hugely grateful to our safeguarding co-ordinators in the Diocese of Leicester for everything they do to make our churches safe spaces to worship.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been victims of abuse in the Church of England and in particular, at this time, for all those affected by the actions of John Smyth.”
