Dear People of God in Central New York,
I am writing with difficult news. On Tuesday after our clergy gathering, I learned that early on Saturday morning the Rev. Canon Dr. Tom Ferguson was driving while intoxicated, had a car accident, and was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. According to the arrest record and Tom’s report, no one else was injured in the accident and for that I give thanks.
Tom wants to share the following: “I ask for your prayers for me and for my family in this difficult time.”
I have placed Rev. Ferguson on administrative leave and I have opened an investigation under the Title IV canons of the Episcopal Church. I have also issued a pastoral directive inhibiting him from priestly ministry. This process will be as transparent as possible while also maintaining appropriate confidentiality. Updates will be offered when feasible.
Please be assured that our staff will continue to move forward with our mission work. If you have been working with Rev. Ferguson and have questions about whom you should contact, Sarah Alamond will be the point person for your questions so that she may direct them to the appropriate staff member. Sarah’s email is salamond@cnyepiscopal.org and she can be reached at (315)670-0102. Rev. Canon Megan Castellan and I will assume responsibility for transitions and church development.
I want to assure you that our diocese is committed to the health and well being of all people and that we are taking appropriate and necessary steps. If you have questions or would like to speak with me about this or any related situation, I welcome the opportunity. Please email Sarah Alamond to schedule a conversation.
All of us are beloved children of God and I ask you to join me in praying for Rev. Ferguson and his family. I am grateful for your prayers and I appreciate your care for the diocesan staff and for one another. I am blessed to serve with you.
Blessings of peace for the journey,
Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe
