The Bishop of Kyushu, the Rt. Rev. Luke Ken-ichi Muto has been elected the 19th primate and archbishop of the Nippon Sei Ko Kai – the Anglican Church of Japan. Elected to a renewable two year term, Archbishop Muto succeeds the Most Rev. Nathaniel Uematsu who served seven terms as archbishop from 2006 to 2020.
Bishop Muto was elected primate at the 65th meeting of the NSKK’s General Synod held 27-29 Oct 2020. Due to the COVID virus pandemic the meeting was held on-line. The new archbishop was installed as archbishop on 5 Nov 2020 at St Mary’s Church in Toyama.
