JI Packer, one of the most influential evangelical Anglican scholars over the last fifty years, died Friday, July 17, at age 93.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, tweeted: “Dr James Packer’s death ends a wonderful service to God by a disciple of learning, wisdom and holiness. A giant of his time.”
Further details will be published as they become available.

A man used powerfully by the Lord, especially to succour the renewal of the Anglican church.
An evangelical giant, he did not count the cost in standing for the truth. Jim Packer was a great teacher and theologian whom stood against the tide of heresy sweeping the Episcopal Church (USA) and the Anglican Church of Canada. An inspiration to many – including me.
You couldn’t have said it better, Dave. My thoughts exactly! I used to say J I Packer and John Stott were the two patron saints of Trinity School for Ministry. My wife and I were both discipled first by studying Knowing God and later by studying The Cross of Christ
May his memory be eternal!
Having just read the news I add my expression of thanks for Packer’s remarkable ministry as one of the big men of (true) evangelicalism.
