The death of George Floyd should raise many questions in each of us. First when I first read about this I was disheartened that someone would have such a low opinion of human life that they could so easily kill someone. There were also the other officers who stood by and allowed this to happen. Then there were the bystanders standing there and watching or making a video of this action and being outraged. They are moralizing but showed no compassion. If these bystanders had acted, yes, they may have been injured or arrested, but they would have displayed Christian Love. Did not our Lord say: ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt 25:40)
The Church can march and beat their chests but it (we) have failed. It is not the failure to deal with racism it protests against; it is failure to teach that we are all created in the image of God, that we are all of value to him. The message of God through Christ cuts across race, culture and nationality. Teach this and racism will disappear.
A man died, a child of God died in a senseless act by another man, we should all be saddened.
