Kuching – Some 25,000 Christians are expected at the most important interdenominational gathering ever organised in the State of Sarawak (eastern Malaysia).

‘Pentecostal Night’ will be held on the nights of 14 and 15 September at the Jubilee Sports Ground, a sports facility located in the heart of the state capital of Kuching.

The theme will be ‘The Holy Spirit and the Harvest’ (Roh Kudus dan Penuaian). The leaders of other religious denominations are also invited, and this will likely attract people from the neighbouring State of Sabah and Kuala Lumpur, as well as Brunei and Indonesia.

“We must work together, for we are one in the unity of Christ and one in the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit,” said Mgr Simon Peter Poh Hoon Seng, archbishop of Kuching, in a statement issued yesterday.

The prelate, who is also president of the Association of Churches of Serawak, added that the unity that celebrates peace, love and harmony, must be imbued in local Christians as they prepare for Pentecostal Night.

The Rt Rev Danald Jute, Anglican bishop of Sarawak and Brunei, said that he was pleased so many Anglicans plan to attend the event. By joining forces with other Christians, the Anglicans can be ushers and prayer warriors.

The Methodist Church will send a large contingent of volunteers to accompany relatives and sick friends, to seek divine intervention for their healing.

Rev Justin Wan, president of the Borneo Evangelical Mission, added his voice to the appeal for Christian unity, reiterating that the gathering represents an excellent venue to bring together Christians to celebrate the gifts of the Holy Spirit and glorify God.

Baptists, Presbyterians, Seventh-day Adventists, and Lutherans also offered their support to Pentecostal Night, as did the Bethany Church, Latter Rain Church and a host of other independent Churches.

In recent weeks, the various groups widely advertised the event in their parish notices, newsletters and online platforms. Intercession prayers have also took taken place.
