  1. Archbishop Welby’s report on speaking and praying in tongues has left me quite confused on the claim he has made. In the past, I have encountered people who do speak in tongues (that is, make sounds during worship that are not identifiable language), and they have fallen into two types.
For type 1, what they describe as an encounter with the Holy Spirit is a completely random event. It takes them completely by surprise. It could happen twice during a church service, or it could not happen for months. They do not turn it on at will, the Holy Spirit comes when he wishes, not when they call Him.

Type 2 is exemplified by an experience I had some years ago when I helped organize a day long concert event with many local church choirs. There were several choirs from Pentacostal or other Charismatic Churches. It was not uncommon to have people speak in tongues, or otherwise be “taken with the Spirit.” But one choir stood out. Several of its members were so taken during their rehearsal the day before. And in exactly the same way, on cue, during the concert.

Being able to turn the Holy Spirit on and off at whim at 5 am daily seems much more like the second than the first.

I cannot speak to the claims of those for whom speaking in tongues is evidence of Holy Spirit in their lives and work. That would be above my paygrade, as it were. But what I do find simple enough is that answer to the question “Is this of God, or not?” In scripture, there are many things we are admonished not to do, or to avoid, and there are many other things we are directed to do, or to enjoy. If the word we receive is within those bounds, then it is likely indeed the Holy Spirit, but if we are called to do things that Scripture forbids, or called to neglect the things that scripture says are necessary, then we are communicating with a different spirit altogether.

  2. Fr. George, I truly believe you were simply swept up in the rhetoric of the moment, but I doubt that Donald Trump would be the first to admit that he is a fallen sinner. In fact, he famously claimed that he had never done anything for which he needed to ask God for forgiveness.
