Recife received as an Anglican province by GAFCON

The Primates of the GAFCON movement have affirmed the election of Miguel Uchoa, Bishop of Recife as the first archbishop and primate of the Anglican Church in Brazil

The Primates of the GAFCON movement have affirmed the election of Miguel Uchoa, Bishop of Recife as the first archbishop and primate of the Anglican Church in Brazil (ACB). During the 16-19 April 2018 meeting in Entebbe, Uganda, the GAFCON primates reviewed the history of the Brazil schism and the work undertaken by the Rt. Rev. Robinson Cavalcanti and his successor, the Rt. Rev. Miguel Uchoa, to maintain and spread a faithful Anglican witness in Brazil.

In their closing communique, the Primates stated:

“The Anglican Diocese of Recife, Brazil has been a diocese that has related extra-provincially to GAFCON since 2008. Through its church-planting efforts, the Diocese of Recife is spreading the gospel across Brazil, and has grown into a province. We recognise them as a province in the Anglican Communion and have approved the installation of the Rt Rev. Miguel Ochoa as the first Primate of the Province. We look forward to his membership of the Primates Council.”

The ACB will join the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) as provinces recognized by the GAFCON archbishops as Anglican Provinces, but who have not yet been elected to membership in the Anglican Consultative Council.

On 12 May 2018 Archbishop-elect Uchoa will be installed as primate at a special service set for the Church of the Holy Spirit in Pernambuco.
