Police have arrested the adopted son of the Bishop of Akoko Edo, the Rt. Rev. Jolly Oyekpen, charging him with masterminding the robbery of the diocesan cathedral, St James in Igarra. In the early morning hours of 4 March 2015, two men broke into the cathedral, stealing N954,000 (£3100) in Sunday offerings that had not yet been deposited in the cathedral’s bank. Police questioned the young man, who under interrogation confessed to having told two confederates where to find the cathedral strong box and revealed where they were to meet to share out the proceeds of the robbery. The police lay in wait for the thieves, who when confronted responded with gunfire. The two criminals were killed when the police opened fire.
