Winston Halapua to step down in August, with his successor scheduled to be elected in January

The Archbishop of Polynesia, the Most Rev. Winston Halapua has announced that he will step down in August after eight year in office. The 73-year old archbishop, who serves as one of three primates for the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia announced on 14 April 2018 that after having served the church for 52 years, he was ready to retire. “I have come to the end of my term and I have enjoyed every part of my journey with the Lord,” he told the Fiji Sun. Archbishop Halapua said his successor would be elected in January and that during the Bishop in Vanua Levu and Taveuni, the Rev. Rev. Apimeleki Qiliho would serve as vicar-general of the diocese that encompassas  Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands. “It’s the time to get in new ideas and share the good news to measure our growth,” he said, adding: “We don’t know who God will select, this is why we are excited because God has given us so much and there’s so much to be grateful for.”
