Al Shabaab suspected in attack that killed two policemen in Ukanda
Suspected Islamist militants attacked an Anglican church in Kenya on Sunday, killing two policeman standing guard outside the building. On 3 Sept 2017 four gunmen riding motorcycles sprayed the entrance to Ukanda Parish Church in the Diocese of Mombasa with machine gun fire, killing one policeman outright. A second died on his way to hospital. The incident follows a bombing at the Machakos country bus station in Nairobi the previous day that killed five and injured dozens of others.. Regional police chief Larry Kiyeng told Reuters it was “too early to say who may have been involved but you can almost pinpoint al Shabaab elements from the nature of the attack.” Police suspect al Shabaab was behind Saturday’s grenade attack in Nairobi. Police spokesman Charles Owino told AFP: “This is a cowardly act by al-Shebab elements. But we will not relent in the war. We will get them and we will continue with the war.” Al Shabaab, a militant Islamist terror group has waged a low level war against Kenya — targeting Christians and soldiers — in response to Kenya’s participation in an East African peacekeeping force stationed in Somalia to support the government in its battle against Al Shabaab.
