The Most Rev. Onesphore Rwaje, Archbishop of Rwanda and Bishop of Gasabo.
Archbishop Onesphore Rwaje was born on 6 June 1953 in the Kinyababa sector of Burera district in Northern Rwanda. Educated in Rwanda and Uganda, he earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Edinburgh in Development Studies and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in California. Ordained deacon in 1985 and priest in 1986, he was appointed a residential canon of St Stephen’s Cathedral in Kigali in 1989 and was consecrated the first bishop of the Diocese of Byumba on 24 Nov 2001. During the Rwandan genocide, he was the only Anglican bishop who remained in the country and was separated from his wife for almost a year by the turmoil. Elected dean of the province in 1995, he was elected Archbishop of Rwanda in 2010 and installed on 11 Jan 2011 as archbishop and translated to the newly created diocese of Gasabo. He is a member of the GAFCON primates council and the Global South primates group. He is married to Josephine, and they have five children.
