Primates of the Anglican Communion — Moderator of the Church of North India

The Most Rev. Pradeep Kumar Samantaroy, Moderator of the Church of North India and Bishop in Amritsar.

Bishop Samantaroy was born on 1 March 1957 in Phulbani in Orissa state and was educated at Serampore College in Calcutta, earning B.Sc. and B.D. degrees. He pursued higher studies at the United Theological College in Bangalore, earning a M.Th. degree. He served as librarian at the theological faculty at Serampore College from 1980 to 1982, and as a lecturer in theology from 1984 to 1989. He was Area Superintendent of the Balliguda Pastorate Union in the Diocese of Phulbani from 1989 to 1991 before moving to the Diocese of Cuttack where he served as secretary, treasurer and vice-president of the diocesan council. He was elected Bishop in Amritsar on 8 May 1999 and consecrated bishop on 30 May 1999. On 4 October 2014 he was elected 13th moderator of the Church of North India. Bishop Samantaroy is married to the Rev.Lily Samantaroy, who serves as a priest at St. Paul’s Church in Amritsar. They have two daughters. As a United Church, the leader of the Church of North India is called a moderator, not archbishop, and its bishops are styled “Bishop in” rather than “Bishop of” XXX.
