Bishop Ludger Schepers, auxiliary bishop of Essen and head of queer ministry for the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK), stated that homosexuality, trans identity, and intersexuality are part of God’s plan. The prelate also called for a shift in the Church’s stance on issues of sex and gender.

A Fervent Defender of Deviance

Bishop Schepers is no stranger to this: in May 2022, he was the first German bishop to participate in an ecumenical service blessing same-sex couples. It is perhaps worth recalling that “campaigns” to bless these “couples” have been taking place regularly in May since 2021, despite the Responsum of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith prohibiting them.

It should be added that the auxiliary bishop of Essen is also a fervent supporter of the ordination of women to the diaconate: on April 15, 2024, he celebrated the closing mass of a training for “deaconesses,” aimed at preparing their introduction into the Church.

Homosexuality and Tans Identity 

The head of queer ministry at DBK claimed that homosexual inclinations and “transgender identity” are part of God’s creative plan, in an interview given on Easter Tuesday, April 7, 2026. He openly defended positions incompatible with Catholic doctrine on the creation of man, sexual morality, and marriage.

His words were unequivocal: “The diversity of human identities, whether homosexual, transgender or intersex, is not a modern construct, but is part of God’s creative plan,” assured the man who has been auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Essen since 2008, and delegate of the DBK for “queer” pastoral care.

The prelate went on to say that whoever excludes people because of their identity is not acting in the name of faith, but in the service of an ideology which, according to him, has nothing to do with Christianity, and he expressly called for a change of course for the Church on issues related to sex and gender.

Employing well-rehearsed feminist rhetoric, Bishop Schepers asserted that patriarchal structures have been actively encouraged for centuries. According to him, this view has nothing to do with the Christian faith, but rather with power struggles, and that anyone who defends these systems “betrays their own message.” He describes any return to these old models as “the wrong path.”
