I write to share important news regarding the parish of St. Matthew’s, Toledo.

The Rev. Zeke Coughlin has requested release and removal from ordained ministry in The Episcopal Church. He has chosen to pursue ministry within the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). The majority of the congregants of St. Matthew’s have elected to join him, and they will begin worshiping this Sunday in a different location as an ACNA congregation.

The Episcopal Church, however, remains present and active at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Toledo. Worship and ministry will continue there, as always, in the name of Christ and in communion with The Episcopal Church. I will be leading worship, praying, and talking with those who remain Episcopalian this Sunday, and together we will begin discernment about a way forward.

While I grieve the decision of so many to walk apart from The Episcopal Church, I pray that they will find the peace and Christian community they seek. The Diocese of Ohio and many among you have sought to be supportive of Zeke and the people of St. Matthew’s and worked hard to assure them that their theological views and understanding are a valuable part of the fabric of our diocese.

Though this separation is painful, it does not and will not diminish our commitment to care for and include all of God’s people in our congregations. We remain steadfast in our witness as Episcopalians to bear witness of the love of Christ for all people.

I ask for your prayers for all those affected by this change. Prayer is the foundation of our life of faith. It heals, brings hope, and reconciles God’s people. We give thanks for the ministries that have been shared, and we entrust to God’s care both those who remain in The Episcopal Church and those who have chosen a different path.

God’s Peace,

+Anne

The Rt. Rev. Anne B. Jolly

Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio
