The Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Lake Malawi, the Rev Canon Daniel Kalonga, was formally presented to President Lazarus Chakwera at Sanjika Palace on Thursday, July 10, 2025, ahead of his upcoming consecration as the fourth bishop of the Anglican diocese.

The leaders of the Anglican Council of Malawi (ACM), led by Rt. Rev. William Mchombo, formally introduced Bishop-elect Kalonga to the President. The delegation expressed deep appreciation for President Chakwera’s unwavering support for religious institutions and his commitment to attending the consecration ceremony scheduled for Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Bishop Mchombo praised President Chakwera’s leadership qualities, noting his acceptance to attend the consecration as “a reflection of a leader who values faith and people”. The Anglican leader particularly commended the President’s firm stance against political violence regardless of political affiliation, emphasizing that “politics must always be about serving the people—not dividing them”.

Bishop-elect Kalonga was elected in succession to the Rt. Rev. Francis Kaulanda on 4 April 2025 during an Elective Assembly held at St Thomas Church in Lilongwe, where he received the requisite two-thirds majority. Prior to his election he served as the diocese’s vicar general and as rector of St Thomas Church in Lilongwe.

Bishop-elect Kalonga’s consecration will take place on Sunday, July 13th, at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe, with President Chakwera in attendance.
