In a message for Easter 2025, and on the second anniversary away from Episcopal Anglican Cathedral Khartoum due to the war in Sudan, Most Rev. Ezekiel Kondo, archbishop and bishop of Khartoum, reflected that many are celebrating Easter away from their loved ones.

“Even though Khartoum was declared liberated and the cathedral was visited for the first time in two years, Sudan has yet to be liberated from death, destruction, and hatred,” the message reads. “Normally on Easter season, All Saints Cathedral would be decorated, colorful, and full of worshipers.”

But not in 2024 and 2025, the archbishop sadly notes, as the cathedral is still standing but full of dust and ashes. “However, we thank God that the building was not bombed even though there is great damage and loss of valuable and historical items,” the message reads. “Easter is a time of celebration and happiness because God has revealed His love through Jesus to die and rise to save us from all evils.”

The message urges us to rejoice, trusting God that all will be well again. “Christ overcame death, and so all who believe in him will live as He is alive today,” reads the message. “I repeat what I said last Easter: May you know the love and the power of the Risen Christ this Easter.”

The message concludes: “It is also my prayer and hope that we will celebrate Easter in our country, in our churches, and with our families, friends. and our loved ones the coming year 2026. May the Divine intervention bring peace to our beloved Sudan.”
