The Bishop of Bondo in the Anglican Church of Kenya was kidnapped by criminals last week, but was released unharmed the following day after being stripped of all his valuables. On 26 June 2015 at approximately 10:00 pm the Rt. Rev Johannes Angela was driving to Bondo in Kenya’s Siaya County near the shores of Lake Victoria when a car blocked his path at an intersection. Deputy County Commissioner Samson Akatch told reporters two gunmen “approached the car and forced him into the boot of his Prado.” Stopping in the bush near they demanded the bishop them his ATM card code and other banking information. They then bound him hand a foot and stuffed leaves into his mouth. The bishop passed out, but when he awoke he was able to free himself and make his way to a nearby village for assistance, Kenyan newspapers reported. The previous week Bishop Angela had hosted the Deputy Prime Minister in a public visit to Bondo — a stronghold of the opposition. However, police believe the kidnapping was motivated by robbery, not politics.
