The new Suffragan Bishops of Selby and Whitby will be admitted and installed as members of the College of Canons of York Minster, during a service of Choral Evensong attended by the Archbishop of York on Friday 18th October beginning at 5.30pm. All are welcome.
The Rt Revd Dr Flora Winfield and the Rt Revd Barry Hill, respectively Bishops of Selby and Whitby in the Diocese of York, were consecrated at York Minster on the 10th October alongside the Rt Revd Tricia Hillas, Bishop of Sodor and Man.
The Suffragan Bishops of Selby, Whitby and Hull, with the Bishop of Beverley and the three Archdeacons of the Diocese of York, are ex-officio members of the College of Canons of York Minster which consists of thirty-six Honorary Canons, who are clergy and lay people drawn from the parish churches of the Diocese.
The principal function of the College is to be ‘the voice of the diocese’ in the life of the Minster, helping the Chapter of York as the Minster’s governing body to develop closer working relationships with the parishes of the diocese.
In the course of the service in the Quire of York Minster, Bishops Flora and Barry will be presented to the Dean of York, the Very Revd Dominic Barrington, who will admit them to the College of Canons and ‘install’ them – conduct them to their own stall or seat in the Minster’s Quire – before they are blessed and the service of Evensong continues.
The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, will preach.
Archbishop Stephen said, “It’s such a joy welcoming both Flora and Barry into the life of the Diocese of York, and I’m looking forward to the great gifts they will bring to the life of our Cathedral Church too. They bring a wealth of experience in ministry, and alongside the Bishops of Hull and Beverley they will help York Minster to celebrate and pray for the life of the church in every corner of the Diocese.”
