The Bishop of Guyana has died. On 30 May 2015 a spokesman for the West Indian diocese reported the Rt. Rev. Cornell Moss had died while recuperating from heart surgery at a Miami hospital. He was 56 years old. A native of The Bahamas, Bishop Moss was appointed Bishop of Guyana in 2009 by the House of Bishops of the Church of the Province of the West Indies after the diocesan electoral college was unable to select a candidate.  Bishop Moss was educated at St James College in Nassau. He  trained for the ministry at Codrington College, Barbados, and earned an STM degree from Nashotah House in 1997. Ordained in 1983, he served parishes in Abaco from 1986 to 1992, and in 1993 was appointed rector of the Church of the Ascension, in Freeport, Grand Bahama. In 1996 Archbishop Drexel Gomez appointed him Archdeacon of the Northern Bahamas. Three years ago Bishop Moss was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and diabetes. Shortly before he went on medical leave, on 29 April 2015 Bishop Moss issued a pastoral letter ahead of Guyana’s May 11 General Election. The bishop urged voters to “strive for perseverance against anarchy,” and elect a government that would “see [Guyana’s] spiritual, moral, ethical and social traditions remain intact.” He called upon politicians to respect each other and honor the outcome. “Await the results,” he asked the country’s political leaders and their supports “and accept them in a good spirit whether they are what you expected or not.” “We all must live here, we all must unite to build Guyana, and we are all our brothers and sisters keepers,” the bishop said in his final pastoral letter.
