Over a dozen primates of the Anglican Communion are meeting this week in Kenya, in an informal conference underwritten by the parish of Trinity Wall Street. The primates come from a cross section of the communion representing the provinces of Burundi, Brazil, Central Africa, West Africa, Central America, Tanzania, Uganda, the West Indies, South Sudan, Sudan and Scotland, the organizer Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit of Kenya reports, with 18 provinces represented.

Joined by the Bishop of Nairobi, the Rt. Rev. Joel Waweru and the rector of Trinity Wall Street the Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, for worship and the opening dinner on 17 Feb 2019, this is the fourth unofficial gathering of primates underwritten by the New York city parish. Past meetings have been held in Kenya, Ghana and Zambia. This year’s meeting is taking place at a retreat center in Maasai Mara.

Archbishop Sapit told Nairobi’s Standard newspaper the bishops were discussing regional security and stability issues. “We are also looking at how diversity can be used to benefit a country like Kenya instead of it being a problem that leads to conflict,” he said.

He noted that they also take time to reflect on the Bible and get lessons that can apply in everyday life in ministry work. “This is an annual meeting where we get together and have a peer review even as we share our experiences and pray for each other and deliberate on our ministry,” he said.
