Australian Anglican statement on anti-Semitism

The recent attack on a Melbourne synagogue has shocked most Australians.

Anglicans are appalled by this attack while people were inside at worship. Freedom of religious expression, and indeed a respect for religious traditionsother than our own, is something we must never take for granted.

Confusion has arisen in some public discourse about the difference between criticism of the actions of the state of Israel and antisemitism. While outrage at the way Israel is treating hundreds of thousands of Palestinians may be justified, antisemitic violence against ordinary faithful Jewish worshippers is always wrong and can only lead to increased violence.

As people of faith, we pray for peace and justice for all human beings, made in the image of God.

As Australians, we long for all people to experience the stability, openness and religious freedom we enjoy in this country.

The Right Reverend Garry Weatherill – Bishop of Ballarat & Acting Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia
