The Diocese of Cuba has elected the Rev. Angel Rivera, rector of Parroquia Ayudada San José in San Juan, Puerto Rico on 28 Feb 2025 as its first bishop elected since its reunion with the Episcopal Church of the USA in 2020, and the first elected, rather than appointed, bishop in over 40 years. Bishop-elect Rivera was elected on the first ballot receiving 12 of 22 clergy, and 28 of 43 lay votes., besting local candidates the Rev. Aurelio Bernabé de la Paz Cot and the Rev. Halbert Pons Santana. A date for the new bishop’s consecration will be set after his election receives the requisite consents from the dioceses and bishops of the wider Episcopal Church.
