The former Bishop of Shyira, the Rt. Rev. Samuel Mugisha Mugiraneza, appeared at the Muhoza Primary Court in Musanze on 12 Feb 2025 for bail hearing. On 21 January 2025 the Rwanda Investigation Bureau released a statement on X saying: “He is under investigation for alleged crimes of embezzlement and misuse of funds for personal gain during his tenure.”
The Anglican Province of Rwanda launched an investigation into Bishop Mugiraneza in August 2024 after members of the clergy complained they had been unfairly sacked. After investigation Archbishop Laurent Mbanda suspended Bishop Mugiraneza and installed the Rt. Rev. Augustin Ahimana in his place.
Bishop Mugiraneza has denied wrongdoing telling one newspaper: “These priests sought to tarnish my reputation after facing disciplinary action”.
