The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda failed to elect a bishop for the Diocese of Namirembe after objections were raised during the closed meeting held at the provincial secretariat in Namirembe yesterday.
Two candidates had been nominated to replace the Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, who turns 65 on December 8, 2023 and must step down from office. The Rev. Abraham Muyinda, the Vicar of Namirembe Cathedral, and the Rev. Canon Moses Banja, Archdeacon of Luzira, were the candidates on the ballot. However, sources in the Church of Uganda tell Anglican.Ink the bishops were divided as to their choice, and that questions had been raised about the nomination process. No details have been provided to the media as to what the objections might have been.
The bishops voted on 4 October 2023 to send the matter to a special committee that will report to their next meeting on November 18, 2023, at which time the matter will be taken up once more.
