Statement by the Society bishops on abortion

1265

[27 Nov 2019] Conscious that the issue of abortion is under renewed discussion, we reaffirm our adherence to the Church of England’s longstanding commitments on this issue.

We pledge ourselves to oppose any legislation involving further liberalization of the law in respect of abortion that may be introduced by any future UK government.

We invite all Christians preparing to cast their vote in the forthcoming General Election to reflect on all issues which touch on the dignity and well-being of the human person. Furthermore we advise that parishes and individual Christians take the initiative of asking any of their parliamentary candidates what their view is on this issue and how they would vote if legislation came before the Commons.

    • While I can’t claim any personal knowledge of the inner workings of the Society, the only listed Society bishop whose signature is missing is +Roger Jupp, who I believe retired from active ministry at the end of last year. Who else did you think might sign? Have any new Anglo Catholic bishops being ordained?

      • I meant to say it is notable and disappointing that only this subset of C of E bishops signed a letter like this …

        • Sorry if I jumped…. it’s so seldom that the bishops representing Anglo Catholics (I hesitate to use the term “Anglo Catholic bishops” which would mean something rather different) in England put their noses above the parapet that I felt rather obligated. In defense of the other bishops that we might otherwise expect to sign up, I imagine this statement was produced during a meeting of the Society bishops and as representative of that particular group. Surely the basic position is also shared by some Evangelicals, and possibly even some of the old liberals (as opposed to progressives). Well, one hopes and prays that is so, in any case.

  1. When the recent legislation approved by the House of Commons for the people of Northern Ireland came through the House of Lords, not ONE of the CofE Lords Spiritual bothered to turn up. Saddened me beyond belief
