  1. This headline needs updating.

    From the Diocesan Facebook Page
“A point of clarity regarding our recent statement:

The Diocese of the Arctic remains a diocese within the Anglican church of Canada, but must distance itself from those who violate the Marriage Canon. The implication of this is a state of “impaired communion”. By using the phrase “self-determining,” we are reserving the right not to affirm or submit to decisions that violate the doctrine of the church on marriage.”

  2. The diocese is not withdrawing from the ACoC. It’s Facebook page says:

  3. I would like some clarification regarding what they mean by “impaired communion.” Will they cease to give or receive financial assistance to or from dioceses which defy General Synod? Will the bishops cease to receive communion alongside the bishops and priests of those dioceses? Are they withdrawing from the decision making bodies of the ACoC? If the Diocese of the Arctic gives or receives money, and receives the eucharist with those bishops, they remain in communion, however reluctantly. If they don’t, if financial and eucharistic koinonia is broken, how are they actually still a part of the ACoC?

    • LfxN: You make some good points. Part of the bind the Arctic Bishops are in, is they diagree strongly with the liberal theology of the southern dioceses. Yet, financially speaking, the diocese of the Arctic is dependent on grants from southern dioceses. So, it is like an unhappy woman in a bad marriage. She wants to leave the marriage, but the thought of leaving is frightening, as she will have to earn her own income, working at minimum wage jobs.

      • They could decide to affiliate with ACNA, which includes both United States and Canada. I suppose they could replace the AcoC on financial terms. I don`t know if they would be able to keep their properties, unfortunately.

        • it’s not possible for the diocese of the Arctic to join the ACNA. The Arctic has two female bishops which is prohibited by the Canons of the ACNA. even if they join and the female bishops were grandfathered in this would cause a split in the ACNA and more than likely the Diocese of Quincy, San Joaquin, Ft worth and All saints would leave if such action were to be taken.

          • I just noticed the two female bishops. I suppose they would have to resign if the Diocese of the Arctic decide to join ACNA. I still don`t know if there would be other obstacles.

        • Prohibited by the ACNA by way of GAFCON’s prohibition. The election of those two women bishops by the Arctic was a bit of a point of no return for them (though maybe they could be a part of the Global South in some way).
