Mozambique peace deal signed

A peace agreement brokered by church leaders has been signed in Maputo by the president of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza and Afonso Dhlakama, the leader of the RENAMO (Resistenza Nazionale Mozambique) guerilla movement to end the country’s two-year old civil war. Talks brokered by the Rt. Rev. Dinis Singulane, the former Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lebombos, Sant’Egidio Community, civil society leaders and the Italian government on 5 September 2014 led to the signing of the according. Following independence from Portugal in 1975 RENAMO and the FRELIMO government fought a civil war that lasted until 1992. However political divisions have remained unresolved and two years ago RENAMO’s leaders returned to the bush and began a campaign of armed resistance. The new agreement geared towards presidential and parliamentary elections in October, seeks the integration of RENAMO soldiers into the army and promises an equitable distribution of the country’s natural resources.
