New bishops for Kigali and Cyangugu

The House of Bishops of the Province de L’Eglise Anglicane au Rwanda has elected a new bishop of Cyangugu and translated a second to the see of Kigali. On 15 July 2019 the bishops elected the Provincial Secretary of the Anglican Church of Rwanda (PEAR), the Rev. Francis Karemera, as bishop of Cyangugu in succession to the Rt. Rev.  Nathan Rusengo Amooti.

Earlier this year, the House of Bishops asked the Bishop of Kigali, the Rt. Rev. Louis Muvunyi to take up the post of rector of the church’s Christian University of Rwanda (CHUR) in Kabuga. Prior to his election in 2010 Bishop Muvunyi served as the principal of Kigali Anglican Theological College 

At their Monday meeting at the Bethanie Hotel in Karongi the bishops decided to fill the post by translating Bishop Rusengo to Kigali, and elected Francis Karemera for Cyangugu.

Born in Gahini, Bishop-elect Karemera (60) served the Church of Uganda from 1984 and returned to Rwanda in 1994 after the genocide.  He earned a Master’s degree in management from Uganda ChristianIn Uganda and a Bachelor of Divinity degree at Bishop Tucker College. As PEAR general secretary, he is the chief operations officer of the province. The bishop-elect will be consecrated and enthroned on 15 September 2019 in Cyangugu the archbishop of PEAR, the Most Rev. Dr Laurant Mbanda said.
